Solid Beam Axles
To find out the size of your current solid beam axle please check the measurement of (B) the OHF (Outer Hub Face), This is the measurement from the outer of one hub face to the otter of the other hub face, knowing as PCD.
The next measurement you need is the thickness of the beam (A) this will normally be 45mm or 50mm in most cases. Also you will need to confirm the PCD of the hub, to check this please refer to the drawings below.
Rubber Suspension Beam Axles
- (A) To find out the size of your current Rubber suspension beam axle please check the measurement of (A) the OHF (Outer Hub Face), This is the measurement from the outer of one hub face to the otter of the other hub face, knowing as PCD.
- (B) This is the called the cut length, it is the full length of the box section of the axle.
- (C) The fixing centre distance (FC), Measure from the centre of one hole of the fixing bracket to the centre of the opposite fixing bracket hole.
- (D&E) Measure the length and width of your fixing bracket.
PCD on a 4 stud hub or rim is a straight line from the centre of one stud/hole, over the large centre hole onto the centre of the other stud/hole on the opposite side.
The same principle applies with a 5 stud rim or hub, the only difference is there is no stud or hole directly opposite the stud you’re measuring from. You will need to imagine there is a hole (As illustrated above) and take a straight line from the centre of one stud/hole across the large centre to the imaginary hole/stud that you have created between the opposite two studs.
The simplest way to confirm the size of brake shoes you have is to firstly establish the brand of the shoes or axle fitted to your trailer. The most common will be either Knott or AL-KO, check the dust cap on the hub and see of there is any branding on the cap. This could be the letter 'A' which would normally represent Avonride otherwise known as Knott-Avonride. Others could be AL-KO or BPW or the dust cap could be plain without any markings.
Remove the brake drum to expose the brake shoes and here you will be able to identify the make of shoe by checking for the brand that is stamped on the shoe, providing they are the original OEM shoe. If they have been replaced with aftermarket shoes which will have no brading then cross match them with the images on our site. If your are unable to identify the brand then please give us a call.
The next step to finding out the size of your brake shoes is to measure the internal dimension of the brake drum, the most common sizes are 200, 230 & 250mm but can be anything from 160 to 300mm. The final step is to measure the width of the shoe which can be from 40 to 60mm wide.
For agricultural brake shoes the same principle applies, identify the brand, measure the internal drum dia. and the width of the shoe. However these types of shoes intended to be much larger from 300 to 520mm and 60 to 200mm wide.
